Building the First Alaska Backcountry Cabin Map
Public cabins, FS cabins, refuge cabins—a unified dataset the backcountry community has been waiting for.
Alaska has hundreds of public-use cabins—Forest Service, Fish & Game, refuge cabins, BLM. But there's no single map that shows them all with booking info, access routes, and amenities.
The Fragmentation
- USFS cabins: Recreation.gov (some), scattered PDFs (many)
- ADF&G cabins: Different reservation system, different maps
- Refuge cabins: Yet another system
- BLM cabins: Sparse documentation
Each agency has its own format, its own booking flow, its own map. Planning a multi-cabin trip means bouncing between five websites.
The Vision
TrueTopo is building a unified cabin layer that:
- Plots every public cabin we can find
- Links to the correct reservation system
- Shows access (trails, boat, plane)
- Indicates season, capacity, and amenities
- Works offline
We're starting with Forest Service and ADF&G—the highest demand. If you know of cabin datasets we're missing, reach out.
